An Outdoor Adventure Every Month

Troop 440 strives to have an outdoor adventure every month. This past year our monthly adventures have included hiking, backpacking, biking, caving, canoeing, exploring, community service projects and more. I wonder what adventure next month will bring?

Summer Camp

Troop 440 loves Summer Camp! What an opportunity! Summer Camp is a great time to experience outdoor activities, earn Merit Badges, enjoy friendships and just enjoy the great outdoors. This upcoming summer the boys are going to Camp Gorton, located on Waneta Lake in the middle of the Finger Lakes in New York State. Great summer-time weather and few, if any, bugs! It provides over 350 acres of land with some of the best facilities in Upstate New York for Boy Scout camps.

Camp Gorton provides a program that is well-suited for younger scouts and is known for having an excellent waterfront and shooting sports program. At the waterfront, they offer facillities for fulfilling the Water Sports merit badge requirements as well as those for the Motorboating Merit Badge for no additional fee. Their shooting sports ranges have 16 slots for fulfilling the Rifle merit badge requirements and has plenty of cover for Scouts, Leaders and Parents to come and observe.

Winter Camp

Winter Camp is a great time to get together with friends, enjoy the outdoors, learn new skills and just have a blast. Troop 440 will attend Winter Camp at Camp Brady Saunders over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. The camp provided a great opportunity to hone cold weather camping skills, complete advancement requirements and earn merit badges (most of which are not typically offered at summer camps).

High Adventure

Nobody offers more exhilarating or a wider variety of high adventure for young people than the Boy Scouts of America. Through high adventure experiences, The Boy Scouts of America leaves lasting memories with youth and fosters development in character and leadership.

Challenge yourself at BSA's High Adventure Bases. From the aquatic adventures of Florida Sea Base  to the canoeing or winter camping challenge of Northern Tier from the backpacking expeditions at Philmont Scout Ranch , to the adventure sports programs at The Summit Bechtel Reserve , these experiences will shape you and teach you about yourself.

Join Troop 440 and let's see how far we'll go together! Check for applications on the Heart of Virginia Council website.
