RULES FOR CAMP OUTINGS:

Pack 502   Rules for Outdoor Camping

For those families who are experienced campers these rules may seem self-evident or unnecessary. However, in Pack 502, we strive to abide by the rules and policies set forth by BSA, which are intended to protect the scouts and their families.

Please be understanding and cooperative.

Vehicles must be parked in designated areas. Vehicles will be allowed to travel near the campsite to unload and load only. Upon unloading, immediately move your vehicle to the camp parking lot. No vehicles in the campsite. BSA policy prohibits anyone from riding on fenders, hoods and trunks of cars or in open beds of trucks.

Camping Rules:

Whatever goes in the Camp Fire stays in the Camp Fire

  •  No rock throwing of any kind!
  •  No knives - Cub Scouts that have earned their whittling chip and are supervised by their parent are allowed to have knives - in a stationary spot.  Not allowed to have on your person while walking around).  All knife safety rules apply.
  •   Only Webelos are allowed to cut firewood.  They must be within designated area, with leader supervision and only one scout in wood yard at a time.  Leadership must rope off  your wood cutting area.
  •    Do not use aerosol cans within 15 feet of tents or open fires.
  •    No drugs or alcoholic beverages.
  •    No fires, grills, Coleman lanterns or open flames in tents or Adirondacks.
  •    Shoes must be worn at all times in camp.  No sandals, please.
  •    No running in campsite
  •    Only Webelos rank scouts are allowed to attend the fire, with adult supervision.
  •     All adults need to be supervising their children at family camping.
  •     Adult supervision at all times.
  •      No Smoking.
  •     Campfires are allowed but confined to the provided fire ring, following BSA guidelines.
  •     Pets are prohibited.
  •     Firearms, air rifles, bow & arrows, explosives and fireworks are prohibited.
  •     Excessive noise is not permitted after 10PM and before 8AM

  • All trash must be placed in plastic bags. ALL TRASH MUST BE REMOVED FROM SITES AND PLACED IN DUMPSTERS
  •    Trees may not be cut.  Any fallen wood found on the ground may be gathered for campfires and cookouts.

At all times BSA Youth Protection Policies apply

Two-deep leadership is required at all times and during all activities with the youth. Two-deep leadership requires two registered adult leaders who have received Youth Protection Training or one Registered Adult Leader who has received Youth Protection Training and one additional adult over the age of 18.

When staying in tents, no youth may stay in a tent with an adult other than his parent or legal guardian.

Please observe designated bathroom signage. (There are showers, you should bring some sort of shower shoes)

Food

All dish washing and hand washing buckets/pans must be emptied at least 50 feet from where people are camping. We will be using a 3 step wash system. Bring your own labeled cutlery and dishes, enough for each member of the family. A mesh laundry style bag is good to put them all in and hang to dry.

Buddy System

Scouts will use the buddy system for all activities at camp. The buddy system requires that scouts travel in at least groups of two.

Water

No Water Sports allowed - No playing in the lake. Do not allow your children to go near the lake unsupervised.

NO EXCEPTIONS!

Outdoor Campfire Safety Rules

We will abide by the BSA Rules of Outdoor Fire Safety:

·   Campfires are allowed but confined to the provided fire ring, following BSA guidelines.

·  Follow all rules of your campsite.

·  Clear all burnable materials from your 10-foot fire circle. Don't build the fire under overhanging branches of trees or shrubs or near roots of trees.

· Only one person at a time in the fire circle.

· Once a stick is placed in the fire it must STAY in the fire!

·   NEVER leave your fire unattended. A responsible adult must be present at all times, and is responsible for safety.

· Do not throw wood on the fire.

·   When you are finished, make sure the fire is DEAD OUT.

·   Have a pot or bucket of water nearby in case sparks start a fire away from the fire circle.

·   Have a bucket of sand and a shovel and/or a fire extinguisher rated ABC near the fire to extinguish it.

        ·   When you are finished cooking, make sure the fire is DEAD OUT. Spread the coals and ashes and sprinkle them with water. Stir and sprinkle until the site is cold. Feel it with you hand to make sure the fire is completely cold.

First Aid

A pack provided 1st Aid Kit will be available to all Pack campers. In addition to basic 1st aid supplies, the kit includes sunscreen, bug repellant, children Tylenol, adult Tylenol, treatment for bug bites, and calamine lotion for poison ivy.  No one but an adult may take items from the 1st Aid Kit.  The first aid kit will be located with camp first Aid officer. There tent will be marked with a reflective red cross for ease to find should an emergency arise in the night.

Siblings

Parents should plan for and provide appropriate activities for siblings younger than the scouts camping or for those siblings that do not want to participate in the scout rank activities.

Uniform

Scouts and Leaders should wear Class A uniform when traveling to camp and home from camp. This is guidelines for scouting insurance. Scouts may wear clothes that can get dirty during the day on Saturday.  If you have a class B (pack or scout insignia shirt.) this is a great time to wear it.

 Sunday Service

There is a chapel service for everyone to attend. We as a pack may opt out to have a Scouts Own Non denominational service in the morning. Scouts will need to be in Class A uniform for this service.

****Each family is asked not to leave until the campsite has been cleaned. All garbage has to be hauled out. All litter must be removed, campfires must be cold out. We will be practicing scouts “Leave no Trace” rule, leave a place better than you found it. ****

CAMPING GEAR

New Parents and First Time Campers,

Be mindful that you are going to be out there for 2 days.

I put a X , by what I thought were the most important items to have.

If you are going out to purchase items keep this in mind:

Purchasing a Tent:  The label says 1-2-3-4 person tent; this means bodies only.  Your clothes will not fit.  Consider adding 2 to your total count to accommodate your gear.   Any questions call Cynthia at 678-725-4158.

You may consider purchasing a tarp to put over the top of your tent to help trap in warmth. Some sites also suggest a footprint for your tent, also.

Sleeping bags: are you a hot or cold sleeper?  Hot you come out of the covers at home. Cold all the cover is piled on top of you. The temp rating on the sleeping bags are based on you not having clothing on. A bag rated 20*F will do the job for a cold sleeper.

Thermals make good sleepwear; Cotton will make you sweat and leave you cold and wet-so not sweats.  (Wal-Mart makes a fleece liner for inside a sleeping bag. They are about $10 and they are wonderful.) also wearing a hat at night helps tons!

Lantern: We suggest that if you purchase one propane lanterns are the brightest.  (get extra propane and a extra package of clothe wicks)--These do not ever go inside your tent!

Chairs: You need to bring folding camp chairs for each family member. Please put your name on them in bold sharpie!

Have the boys do their part by collecting the lint in the dryer and putting it in a plastic bag.  Bring it with them.  This is a great fire starter.

LEAVE AT HOME:

*Radio, iPod

*Electronics of any kind, game boys, DS, etc.

*hunting knives

*firearms

*axes/saws

*tobacco

*alcohol

*pocket knives (unless scout has earned whittling chip)
