Pack 611 Pinewood Derby Rules



 
Each car is inspected at weigh-in for the following inspection points:

Pinewood Derby Car Dimensions:
The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
The overall width of the car shall not exceed 3 inches.
The Car must have 1 inch clearance between the wheels.
The Car must have 3/8 inch clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.

Derby Car Weight
The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.
The official race scale that is used at the car check-in shall be considered final.

Wood, Wheels, Axles
The official pinewood block must be used.
It may be shaped in anyway that is desired.
Official BSA Wheels must be used.
The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded.
You may remove the seams and any imperfections from the wheels.
If you do not use the wheels in the kit you must provide packaging that shows that they are BSA approved.
Official BSA Axles / Nails must  be used.
They may be altered, polished, and dry lubricated.
If you do not use the axles/nails in the kit you must provide packaging that shows that they are BSA approved.

Please keep in mind when considering using alternative Wheels and Axles/nails, that this is for the Scouts.  AND Please remember that this is for FUN.

Car modifications Not Allowed:

Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.
The car must not ride on any type of springs.
No starting devices - the car must be freewheeling.
No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.

General Rules:
1. Once a car passes inspection and is entered in the race, only the race committee members can touch it.
2. If a car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make repairs. 
3. Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to race. 
4. The inspection committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these specifications. However, if a car fails inspection, the inspection committee shall advise the Scout why his car has failed inspection, and allow Scout to make required altercations enabling the car to pass inspection. 
5.  All entries must be of new construction (ie. built in this current school year).
Care care clinic, weigh in, inspection, and registration will start at 10:00am and the races will start at 11:15am. 
6. The boys in each den will race against each other for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their Den. Additionally, there will be prizes awarded for the top 3 finishers in the Pack. There will be additional awards given in special categories (such as but not limited to: Most Cub Scout-like, Most Creative, Most Representative of Oregon, Fastest Looking). These awards will be voted on, and agreed upon by the Race Officials. 
7. Good sportsmanship is required by all.  Race officials reserve the right to remove any individual in attendance that displays poor sportsmanship.
Unlimited Category:

There will be an unlimited race where parents, siblings, and friends are welcome and encouraged to enter cars.  In this category there are NO HOLDS BARRED--NO Restrictions!  IT IS JUST FOR FUN!
